What a wild ride we had today! The field trip was so much fun. The kids had a great time learning about birds, bugs and whales.
As you can imagine, the kids were pretty excited upon arrival at the museum. First we went to the presentation room at the museum where we went over the rules. We even tried to make up a few rules of our own for the museum (Ben and Caleb-No jumping on statues or we might split open the statue and our head). There we split into 3 groups. One group all from K Creamer, one group of K Krickler and one mixed group of the two classes. I was lucky enough to be in the mixed group where I had a chance to learn with some of Mrs. Krickler's kids and our kids. The groups visited three galleries: the bird gallery, the insect gallery and the whale gallery.
In the insect gallery we learned about insects from long ago who lived in New Brunswick. We saw a huge millipede! It was as big as a golden retriever! It was a great gallery. However, our kids were a little concerned when they saw a butterfly display-monarchs were pinned in the display. I guess the poor museum tour guide heard from a few of our kids about this!
In the bird gallery we learned about the many different bird species found around New Brunswick. The kids got to touch feathers, hear the different bird calls and learn about what makes a bird a bird.
In the whale gallery, we met Delilah the whale. She was enormous. The kids learned about the difference between whales and fish. It has something to do with their tail. Ask them tonight!
After we toured the galleries, we made a craft. The kids had to make their own whale tail. We had a great time making different patterns on our tails.
It was a fabulous day! Thank you to the parents who popped into the museum to see us. The kids loved the surprise visits! Check below for a few pictures of our class making the whale tail craft.

Halloween Fun
Just a reminder that on Monday October 31st we will be having a small Halloween party.
Here are a few details:
The Halloween party group will be in charge of snacks (Rebecca Beach, Addison Merrithew, Brenden Quigg, Nora Koval and Kai Langseth). All napkins, plates, cups and drinks will be provided. Please cut any items into individual pieces if necessary. Please remember NO NUTS due to allergies.
Things like cheese and crackers, pretzels, fruit, cookies, veggies and dip are nice party snacks.
Children may dress in orange and black or they are welcome to wear a simple costume. Bathroom space is limited so it is best they do not change at school but arrive with their costume on. If they arrive in costume, they stay in costume all day. Be sure your child can maneuver in their costume (sit, walk, play, write etc).
Please do not send props or accessories (swords, wands). These things may get lost or be forgotten at school.
Thanks for your cooperation! The kids are really looking forward to our little party!

Math Game
This month we have been working on shapes and number sense. Here are a couple of pictures of the kids playing the game "Spin a number". The kids had to use their spinner, count the number of squares on their picture, and show the number with counters. Their partner checked their work. The kids had a great time being little teachers and checking their partners work!

More Kindergarten Writing
I am so excited! Today, our kids tried their hand at writing their own sentences. Wow! I am very proud of them. The kids can now draw a detailed picture, label their picture and make their own sentence. I am so impressed! Check out some of our wonderful writing below! We have come a long way since the first day of school!

Thank You
Wow we have such wonderful volunteer parents in our room! A big thank you to Mrs. Dorcas (Ben's mom) and Mrs. Mackin (Gregory's mom). Mrs. Dorcas is our librarian. The kids absolutely love hearing her read. When she is reading to them it is so quiet you could hear a pin drop! Another big thank you to Mrs. Mackin who stopped by to check on something but ended up helping pass out pizza! The kids love seeing/meeting you!

Sight Words Newsletter
Dear Parents,
In Kindergarten students are engaged in many pre-reading and reading activities throughout the day. One activity is finding "popcorn words" in books and charts in our classroom.
Popcorn words are sight words. In Kindergarten we call them popcorn words because they keep "popping up" in our reading. Studies have shown the more sight words a student can recall the better reader they will become.
There are 25 popcorn words your child should know by the end of Kindergarten. To help your child learn these words I am sending home and posting this list for you. Each month we will focus on a few of these words in school. I will include the words we are focusing on in my monthly newsletter. Please note:they are not required to spell these words in Kindergarten.
I will also send home suggestions for activities you may want to do with the sight words in the next few months.

Spooky The Friendly Ghost
We will be having a special visitor in our classroom. He will be visiting us everyday until it is Halloween.
Our guest's name is Spooky. Spooky is the friendly ghost that lives in our class. He isn't scary, he wants to make friends. Spooky knows that the time before Halloween can be pretty tricky, sometimes kids get excited and forget to follow class rules. So Spooky has a plan to prevent our class from getting a major case of the sillies. When our class has A++ behavior he will leave us a treat. When our class has a forgetful day and we forget about the rules-Spooky will not leave us a treat. He will leave us a trick.
On Friday, our class attended a very important Halloween safety assembly. I wasn't at the assembly because I was meeting with the other Kindergarten teachers. Our kids were very good listeners and really liked the assembly. How did I know if I wasn't there? Spooky told me. Spooky was watching the kids when they were in the Gym for the assembly. Spooky said our kids were the best listeners there. Wow! I wonder if Spooky will leave us a treat on Monday?

Monarch/Caterpillar projects
Well we are completely finished with Monarch butterflies and caterpillars. We sent Katie the butterfly off to Mexico and then we started some work! We made caterpillar patterns and did a Monarch art project. The kids had to tell me their favorite fact to put up with their Monarch art. If you are ever in the school, pop on down to our hallway and check out our great bulletin board!

Field Trip/Fundraiser
Hello Everyone!
I'm sorry I haven't updated this week-we are very busy in class and my camera is being used to make a new class book which means I forget it at school most nights! I promise to have plenty of updates to our blog later tonight and tomorrow.
As some of you may know we will be going to The New Brunswick Museum on October 26th. We leave the school at 9:10 and arrive for our tour at 9:30. The kids will be learning more about the changes that occur in the fall with animals and birds preparing for winter-this tour goes along beautifully with our fall theme. The kids will be bringing their snack as we will be eating at the museum. We will return to school at 11:30-just in time for lunch! The price is $2.50. Please have the money and the permission slip returned to me as soon as possible. :)
We will be starting a new fundraiser at Fairvale. Tonight, a catalogue will be sent home with your child. This catalogue is full of great holiday gift ideas! A portion of the sales will go back into our school directly helping our kids. What a great way to start your Christmas/Hanukkah shopping!
Stay tuned for more blog updates! I can't wait to show you what the kids have been learning.
