Arf! The Grade 1 Musical

The kiddos in Grade 1 will be performing in a musical on June 10th. We have been practising the songs in class. The kids love the songs-especially Fight Fair. Below please find a few videos of the songs the kids are learning. The kiddos asked me to post them so they could sing/practise at home. Too cute!
I am not going to post them all-you parents need some surprises!

Grade 1 Flexible Groupings/Grade 2 Math Big Buddies

We had a fantastic Math day today! The Grade 1's started flexible math groupings. The kiddos are placed with a different teacher with peers from other Gr. 1 classrooms to learn Number concepts/strategies. I had some kids come back from their groups doing math cheers and  a few taught me a new math game. It was a great opportunity for the kids to learn math, meet other Gr. 1 kids, and have fun doing it. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of my Gr.1's as I was with a group of new to me Gr. 1 students at this time!

What did I do with our Gr. 2's during this time? Well Mrs. Olive and I partnered up and started Math Big Buddies. Her kindergartners will work with our Grade 2's during the Tuesday flexible grouping time. Today the Grade 2's read math books to the Kindergarten children, completed a Math About Me project, and played a number recognition game. Big Math Buddies are a great opportunity for our 2's to practise explaining their strategies!

Here are some pictures below!

Happy Birthday Sarah

Sarah it is no fun being sick on your actual birthday-here is a little surprise for you!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Measurement in Grade 1 and 2

Yesterday we did a very fun measurement activity. We learnt that when we measure we compare.
The Grade 2's measured themselves and a partner with Popsicle sticks and string while they were standing up and laying down. They lay on the floor and measured their partner with Popsicle sticks and then they had their partner stand up, measured them with string, then taped the string to the floor and measured the string with Popsicle sticks. This was to show that their size didn't change when they were laying down or standing.

The Grade 1 students went on a measurement hunt! They were given a pencil to use as a referent. They had to find things that were longer, shorter and the same as their pencil. We also touched on using standard vs. non standard units when measuring. They really enjoyed themselves.

Here are a few pictures from our math class yesterday.

Art Curriculum Night

FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY!
Art Curriculum Night was finally a go! The kids were so proud of their henna elephants! I know most parents were able to come to the curriculum night. However, a few did miss it due to other appointments so here is a quick snapshot of all the wonderful art projects on display!

A big shout out goes to Mrs. Gillis for all of her hard work in organizing this night. She is amazing!

Mrs. Morgan Teaches us about Germs

Sorry for the delay in posting-we have been trying to get back into our routine after a few weeks of testing for report cards and our snow days!

Two weeks ago we had a class parent, Mrs. Morgan, come in and teach us about germs! She spoke to the children about how germs are spread, taught the kids how to prevent the spread of germs through proper hand washing technique and gave them a quick demonstration showing the germs that could be on their hands using a black light.

I must say I think the demonstration worked! We always wash our hands before eating but Mrs. Grant and I normally need to ask the kids to go back and wash their hands better (they tended to just splash water on them and say they had washed their hands!). Now it looks like the kids are prepping for surgery when they wash their hands-talk about a major 360!

Below please find a few pictures of Mrs. Morgan's presentation. And once again thanks Mrs. Morgan!

The kiddos listening to Mrs. Morgan about how germs are spread.

The kids put a powder on their hands that when rubbed in would show them all of the germs on their hands when put under a black light.

The kids applied their new found hand washing technique and them came back to check and see if they washed off all of the germs by putting their hands under the black light once more.
