New Brunswick Politics and Government
The provincial government of New Brunswick is responsible for housing,
education, fisheries, energy, justice, tourism and parks, and transportation as
well as several other provincial departments.
The provincial legislature is found in Fredericton, the capital city of
New Brunswick. There are 55 members of the legislative assembly. The political
parties in New Brunswick are the Liberals, Progressive Conservatives, New
Democrats and the Green Party.
An election takes place every four years. The party with the most elected
members becomes the governing party. Its leader becomes the premier.
The premier chooses elected members to be in a Cabinet. The Cabinet
currently has 15 people from the Legislative Assembly. Each of the Cabinet
ministers heads a provincial department. Each Cabinet minister is chosen by the
premier, and may be dismissed by the premier.
Presently, a Conservative, Honourable David Alward, is the Premier of New
Brunswick.
