Literacy Week-Puppies in the Classroom!

I must say we have had a busy day-two posts in one day says it all! It was busy in both 2 Shillington and 2 Creamer! The kids in these two classes received an awesome gift!

After our lovely parent volunteers left this morning I brought out a large wicker basket and told the kids I had a very big surprise that required a very big commitment from them. To say the basket piqued their interest is an understatement. They were absolutely dying to know what I had in store for them!

Mrs. Quinn came in this morning and was teasing the kids by saying "Oh it smells like puppies!" Little did she know she was spot on!

I started by reading a sweet book (thanks Mrs. Kilpatrick for the suggestion) called "How Rocket Learned to Read". It is a story about how a little puppy learns his letters and sounds and then puts them all together to make words. After reading, the class had a nice discussion about how we felt when we all began to read in Kindergarten. The kids had mixed feelings. Some said they had been excited and some said they had been very nervous. We talked briefly about the strategies we had learnt to help us figure out words when we started reading and the tough comprehension strategies we use now that we are better readers.

I then showed the kiddos what their big commitment was for the remainder of the year. They were going to teach their very own puppy how to read. I told the kids they would be practising their words of the week with their puppy, reading strategies etc.  They were PUMPED!

Each student received their own puppy, named him and began to teach. It was seriously cute. They had some pretty creative names like Double O Woof, Bowser Jr., Brownie and Emmet to name a few.

I can't wait to see what the kids teach their puppies tomorrow.
