Technology Mentor

We are so very fortunate that we have laptops and netbooks available to students at our school. Every Friday is laptop day in our class. The students practise their math homework for the following week on ixl.com, read on raz-kids and learn how to type on the dance mat typing game. Today Mr. Robichaud, a former Grade 5 teacher at Fairvale and now a technology mentor, came to our class to teach our kiddos a little bit about Microsoft Word. The kids learnt how to insert a table, copy and paste a picture from the Internet onto their word document, type a sentence, change the font size and save their work. They had a lot of fun and they had many questions for Mr. Robichaud. The kids loved having him here!

Inuksuk

We are in the home stretch now! The Gr. 2 kids have been learning about Inuksuks and their meanings. Inuksuk act as a guide, they act in the place of a person. They may mean "Welcome" or "We were here". They may act as a navigational guide pointing out which way to go. They may point out good hunting grounds or indicate that food is nearby. They may be in the shape of a window and mean "look at this place".

This means welcome or we were here

The kids have been learning about Inuksuk, the Inuit people and Nunavut during this unit. As practise for their final project, they have been writing about the meaning of different Inuksuk and creating their own. See below for their work. The top box is information about real Inuksuk and the bottom box is an Inuksuk and a meaning that they created on their own.

Top: This Inuksuk means to look through and look at all the beautiful things. Bottom: This Inuksuk means love.

Top: I have been to this place. Bottom: Run danger run go away run!

Top: This represents that somebody was here. Bottom: This means that whatever way it is pointing there is a village.

Top: This shows where food is and it tells them food is nearby. Bottom: This reminds me of my dog Wiket.

Top:This one is really cool. I like it because it means there is another Inuksuk. Bottom: This is the snowman Inuksuk. It means its a snowman.
Top: This means there is another marking nearby. Bottom: This means there is a dangerous animal.

Top: This is a window Inuksuk. You can see a special tree. Bottom: This means there is a goldmine nearby.

Top: This represents somebody has been here. Bottom: This represents that there is a dangerous animal here.

Enjoy!

Grade 1 Penguin Unit

Well, we are wrapping up an exciting unit on penguins before the kids go off to enjoy their well deserved March Break. The kids have read many books on penguins, practised their report writing by doing an in class project on penguins, created penguin art, and watching a documentary on Emperor penguins. The kids really enjoyed learning about these amazing animals and will be doing a few more activities this week before we are ready to be done. We learnt many interesting facts so the kids choose 2 of their favourite facts to share with the class.

This says:Top: The egg could die if it is not warm. Bottom:The mommy spits up in its mouth. You might think it is sick but to them it is yummy.

Top:The penguin is feeding her baby. When they hatch the mom comes back. Then she feeds the baby. Bottom: A baby penguin is six inches tall. When the baby penguin is in the egg and gets cold then it could die.

Top:Emperor penguins are almost as tall as me. Bottom: Baby penguins are up to my legs.

Top: The Emperor penguin is 4ft tall. It is the tallest penguin species. Bottom: The mother penguin spits barf into the baby's mouth to feed .

Top: The penguin spits up in the chicks mouth. Bottom: The daddy has the egg on his feet.

Top: If an egg slides down hill and breaks the baby could die. Bottom: If the egg gets cold the baby could die
As you can see they seemed to get stuck on the mom's particular way of feeding the baby and the mortality of the egg. We did learn some happier facts but our kiddos latched onto those ideas! :s

Adding Doubles

In Math both grades are working on adding doubles. It is a review for the Gr. 2's and new to the Gr. 1's. Here are two little "rap" videos we groove to in order to practise our facts. Enjoy!

I tried to get a video of them performing the songs...but they became really self conscious. I'll have to try to do it secretly one day because they are too funny!

100 Day

How do you...what...DELETE! How do these young whipper snappers use this thing? Where is my type writer?...dbvjdvdfkdo...how do I get rid of that now? Oh, oh...hello. Agnes here and I have high jacked Mrs. Creamer's class. Actually the whole retirement home has taken over.
Agnes here...call me Aggy for short.

The old folks. Don't we look like a bunch of party animals?

We sent the kids to go play outside for the day...at least that is where I think we sent them! We made a few stay with us for today-we need nurses. Poor Gray, Anna and Sydney have to put up with all of our cheek pinching! zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...snore.....oh what? Sorry I dozed of there. I missed my mid morning nap. Mrs. Creamer left all of this boring work for us seniors to do today but we've been out of elementary school for close to 100 years now so we didn't do that. We played 100 day games instead. The old fogeys sure loved the games!

100 cup stacking. I'm surprised their shakey hands were able to do this activity!

Roll to 100

Flip a coin 100 times

Race to 100 place value game

100 sticker stamp

Yesterday, when those young kids were here, they made a picture of what they think they might look like at the age of 100. I think they look pretty good. Check out those wrinkles!

Shape and Space

Well, we are finishing up some work on 3-D and 2-D shapes. Both grades had little quizzes and we just finished an art/math sculpting project to wrap it all up. In Gr. 1 students need to replicate composite 2-D and 3-D objects (SS3) and in Gr. 2 students need to construct 3-D objects (SS7) so creating shapes using clay seemed like the perfect math/art combined project for our Friday afternoon. I had each student choose 4 shapes that they would like to try to create. The Gr.1's had the option of doing 2-D shapes as well. But let's be honest,3-D shapes are way more fun to create (this according to my buddies Liam and Owen) so most of them chose to do mostly 3-D shapes. Check out the work below.

Science East

Last week our school was fortunate enough to have Science East visit. Science East believes in providing hands-on science learning and educational opportunities through interactive science exhibits in order to demonstrate basic science concepts, prompt curiosity and foster interest and understanding of science among people of all ages. The kids had a great time exploring the exhibits. If you are interested in learning more about Science East here is a link to their site: http://www.scienceeast.nb.ca/home.asp

These little monkeys were trying to get me to sit on a chair of nails. I thought it wasn't too comfortable but they were convinced they were the best chairs ever.

These little dudes were busy building.

Exploring the optical illusion machine.

This activity involved using only your reflection and magnets to trace a picture-it kind of reminded me of the game operation.

Attempting to solve a pretty tough puzzle.

One of the kiddos using the noise machine. It was made of pvc pipe and flip flops.

Tinted Valentine's Day Hearts

The kids have started a writing/art project for Valentine's Day. We dabbed, blended and mixed with paints. I won't say too much about the project because the kids want it to be a surprise for Student Author Night. Their pieces of art turned out beautiful and so far the writing isn't too bad either!:) Hopefully the kids will have the projects completed for viewing this Thursday!
