Grade 1 Penguin Unit

Well, we are wrapping up an exciting unit on penguins before the kids go off to enjoy their well deserved March Break. The kids have read many books on penguins, practised their report writing by doing an in class project on penguins, created penguin art, and watching a documentary on Emperor penguins. The kids really enjoyed learning about these amazing animals and will be doing a few more activities this week before we are ready to be done. We learnt many interesting facts so the kids choose 2 of their favourite facts to share with the class.

This says:Top: The egg could die if it is not warm. Bottom:The mommy spits up in its mouth. You might think it is sick but to them it is yummy.

Top:The penguin is feeding her baby. When they hatch the mom comes back. Then she feeds the baby. Bottom: A baby penguin is six inches tall. When the baby penguin is in the egg and gets cold then it could die.

Top:Emperor penguins are almost as tall as me. Bottom: Baby penguins are up to my legs.

Top: The Emperor penguin is 4ft tall. It is the tallest penguin species. Bottom: The mother penguin spits barf into the baby's mouth to feed .

Top: The penguin spits up in the chicks mouth. Bottom: The daddy has the egg on his feet.

Top: If an egg slides down hill and breaks the baby could die. Bottom: If the egg gets cold the baby could die
As you can see they seemed to get stuck on the mom's particular way of feeding the baby and the mortality of the egg. We did learn some happier facts but our kiddos latched onto those ideas! :s
